About this book

Elijah Dow did not breathe on his own for the first seven minutes of his life. His father stood watching the team try to keep him alive until he finally made a sound. Before his parents left the hospital, the doctors warned them that autism was possible. They warned them the day he was born — about a boy who would grow up to run toward strangers with his arms open.Elijah is nine. He draws chalk maps up and down his street, runs to meet every passing golf cart, and takes archery classes on Saturday. He Feeds Dinosaurs is the true life story of that boy, told by his father and his mother. It is an autism memoir, and a quiet, devastating argument about a word that was never big enough to hold him. What happened to Elijah has a name: hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. HIE is well known as a cause of cerebral palsy and seizures, and far less discussed as one of the roads that can lead to an autism diagnosis — though the research connecting the two is real. The word he was finally handed opened every door and explained nothing. He gets better. Not all at once, and not into someone else — slowly, unevenly, and because people kept showing up. Therapists who sat on the floor with him. A teacher who gave him jobs. A mother with a finger moving under each word, an hour before bed, until her son could read.IIf you are raising a child with special needs, and yours was born in distress — a cord, meconium, a NICU stay — and later met a word that didn't quite fit, you are not imagining the gap between them. About the Author

Daniel Dow is a software engineer. At twenty he was a high-school dropout, addicted to drugs, living on a mattress on the floor of a garage. He taught himself into a career in technology — and years later, an hour before bed with a finger moving under each word, taught his son to read. He Feeds Dinosaurs is his first book. He lives in rural Florida with his wife Kristan, Elijah, and Elijah's younger brother, Isaiah — who, asked who his best friend is, says Elijah.
