About this book

Most markets do not begin with a big idea. They begin with a small irritation that everyone has learned to live with.FLIP is a practical method for turning those overlooked pain points into market opportunities. It carries one pain point the full distance, from an irritation nobody has named to a first verdict from the market.FACE the pain point instead of explaining it away, and strip off the four layers of silence that keep it hidden.LOOK beneath what customers say to see what their behavior reveals.INVENT solutions without losing sight of the problem that made them worth creating.PITCH, PIERCE, and PLAY to test the bet, read the evidence without overclaiming, and decide where money, people, and time go next. Most methods in this field cover one half of the distance. Some help you find problems. Others help you test solutions. FLIP runs the whole line and puts a gate at each end of it, because a well-run test on the wrong problem still returns a confident wrong answer. At the center of FLIP are two decisions innovation teams often blur together: Which problem is worth solving? Which solution is worth betting on?The book includes the FLIP Decoder, ten reusable tools that carry one pain point from first capture to first market verdict, from an observation sheet and a journey map, through the wedge sentence that finally names the problem, to an evidence audit and a resource decision sheet. A running case file, drawn from real founder experiences, shows the tools in use.The method comes out of twenty years of consumer research, new-product development, and brand strategy for P&G, Samsung, Nike, Pepsi, Amorepacific, and other global brands, most of it in South Korea, where new products and categories are tested quickly and consumers react fast. Soyoon Park, PhD, has done that work and taught it for the same twenty years.Read FLIP if:Your customers say they are satisfied but do not come back.Your team has more solutions than agreement on the problem.A market test produced data but no decision. You can see customers working around something no one has named yet.Small pain points do not always become massive markets. But massive markets often begin with something small that somebody finally refused to walk past. Read more
